Optimal Imaged-based Defocus Estimates from Individual Natural Images

چکیده
We present a general method for estimating defocus blur from first principles, given a set of natural scenes and properties of the vision system. Local, high-precision, signed estimates are obtained for a model human visual system. OCTS Codes: (100.0100) Image Processing; (110.0110) Imaging Systems; (330.0330) Vision, color, and visual optics

Optimal defocus estimation in individual natural images.
Defocus blur is nearly always present in natural images: Objects at only one distance can be perfectly focused. Images of objects at other distances are blurred by an amount depending on pupil diameter and lens properties. Despite the fact that defocus is of great behavioral, perceptual, and biological importance, it is unknown how biological systems estimate defocus. Given a set of natural sce...
متن کاملOptimal defocus estimates from individual images for autofocusing a digital camera
Recently, we developed a method for optimally estimating focus error given a set of natural scenes, a waveoptics model of the lens system, a sensor array, and a specification of measurement noise. The method is based on first principles and can be tailored to any vision system for which these properties can be characterized. Here, the method is used to estimate defocus in local areas of images ...
متن کاملSuper-resolution of Defocus Blurred Images
Super-resolution is a process that combines information from some low-resolution images in order to produce an image with higher resolution. In most of the previous related work, the blurriness that is associated with low resolution images is assumed to be due to the integral effect of the acquisition device’s image sensor. However, in practice there are other sources of blurriness as well, inc...
متن کاملDefocus blur discrimination in natural images with natural optics.
The lens system in the human eye is able to best focus light from only one distance at a time. Therefore, many objects in the natural environment are not imaged sharply on the retina. Furthermore, light from objects in the environment is subject to the particular aberrations of the observer's lens system (e.g., astigmatism and chromatic aberration). We refer to blur created by the observer's opt...
متن کاملExtended depth-of-field imaging and ranging in a snapshot
Traditional approaches to imaging require that an increase in depth of field is associated with a reduction in numerical aperture, and hence with a reduction in resolution and optical throughput. In their seminal work, Dowski and Cathey reported how the asymmetric point-spread function generated by a cubic-phase aberration encodes the detected image such that digital recovery can yield images w...
